We reported back in March that HBO was developing a series adaptation of zombie survival game The Last of Us. Now we’re hearing that the series has officially been greenlit!
Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) is developing the small screen adaptation for HBO, and will write and executive produce alongside Neil Druckmann, the game’s original creator and writer. The first season will adapt the first game in the franchise, which was released in 2013.
Set 20 years after modern civilisation has been destroyed, the series will follow Joel, a hardened survivor, who is hired to smuggle Ellie, a 14-year-old girl, out of an oppressive quarantine zone. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey as the pair traverse across the US—forced to depend on one other for survival.
Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, Word Games, and Naughty Dog are producing the series. We’ll bring you casting details and other news as we hear it!
