Announced earlier this year, HBO Max is developing a new series called Welcome to Derry that will serve as a prequel to Andy Muschietti’s It movies. And according to a tweet from writer Shelley Meals, the show’s writers’ room is officially open!
Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti are executive producing the series, which will begin in the 1960s. Welcome to Derry will also reportedly tell the origin story of Pennywise the Clown.
First published in 1986, Stephen King’s It follows the Loser’s Club as they battle the shapeshifting creature known as Pennywise, which has terrorised the town of Derry, Maine for decades. The novel was first adapted as a TV miniseries in 1986, with Tim Curry playing Pennywise. Bill Skarsgård played the role in Andy Muschietti’s 2017 It and the 2019 sequel, It: Chapter Two, which collectively grossed more than $1.1 billion at the global box office.
