We are lucky enough to live in an age that allows the rescuing and preservation of cult favourite genre films. Companies like Shout! Factory and Arrow Video have pulled out all the stops on stellar releases over the last few years. However, the company that has seen the biggest boom in both content and turnover is undoubtedly Vinegar Syndrome.
Initially a rather small and obscure label, the company has crafted an impeccable reputation in the last few years with their unwavering dedication to the cheesiest of slasher movies and the most obscure creature-features. Always loaded with extra features and beautifully restored, Vinegar Syndrome has become one of physical media’s heavyweight sources in a very short time.
And it seems there is no stopping this label, as last week they announced a slew of new titles gracing both blu-ray and 4K in their Halfway to Black Friday sale event. It is perhaps little surprise that the company led with their newest slasher acquisitions, announcing Uli Lommel’s 1980 classic The Boogeyman in a lovingly restored 4K UHD/Blu-ray set stacked with extra features.
Alongside Lommel’s genre-bending film, obscure 1987 slasher Night Screams was also announced to be receiving identical treatment. This marks the near-forgotten movie’s first HD release after being lost to decades of murky VHS prints.
The final slasher of the bunch is Lamberto Bava’s 1983 slasher-giallo hybrid A Blade in the Dark. Vinegar Syndrome’s release will mark the film’s first time on 4K UHD, however, it has previously received a European Blu-ray release.
And that’s not all! There’s one creature feature announcement that’s got everyone talking… 1985’s Boggy Creek II: The Legend Continues will also be making it’s blu-ray debut thanks to Vinegar Syndrome. Previously only available on a cheap pan-and-scan DVD, this obscure backwoods sequel will finally find a wider audience with the release of a blu-ray loaded with extras.
