Yuletide zombie musical comedy, anyone? Premiering at Fantastic Fest this weekend is Anna and the Apocalypse, which comes from Scottish director John McPhail, and you can watch the first trailer right here.
The film – a gory, twisted take on High School Musical – stars Ella Hunt (Intruders, Robot Overlords) as teenager Anna, with newcomer Malcolm Cumming as her best friend, John, with whom she must battle the undead. Sarah Swire and Christopher Leveaux (Aaaaaaaah!) also star, along with British comedy regulars Mark Benton (Eddie the Eagle, Career Girls) and Paul Kaye (It’s All Gone Pete Tong, Blackball).
Synopsis:
When a zombie apocalypse threatens the sleepy town of Little Haven, Anna and her high school pals must fight, sing and slash their way to survival. Teaming with her best friend John, Anna and her crew try to save family and faculty alike as they encounter zombified snowmen, a manic bachelor party and teenage hormones. But they soon discover that no one is safe in this new world, and the only people they can truly rely on are each other.
Ryan McHenry scripted (alongside Alan McDonald), having directed the 2010 short film Zombie Musical, upon which Anna and the Apocalypse is based. He was set to direct the feature, but duties went to McPhail after McHenry sadly passed away in 2015.
