As the time nears for their return, The Strangers: Chapter One has received an official rating from the MPAA.

Renny Harlin’s prequel has come out of the gate strong with a solid R rating for “horror violence, language and brief drug use.”

This keeps with the tradition of the series, with both previous entries garnering the same rating for similar themes.

Chapter One is part of an ambitious project from Lionsgate to launch a new trilogy of films. Whilst that’s not unusual, the fact that all three have been filmed and will release within months of each other is quite the gamble.

According to director Renny Harlin, Chapter One will follow “many of the same beats as the original,” whereas the sequels are set to “blaze a new path.” When asked to elaborate on this, Harlin clarified the sequels will focus on the aftermath of such a horrendous act of violence on both the victims and the perpetrators.

The Strangers: Chapter One will release on May 17th and stars Madelaine Petsch, Froy Gutierrez, and Gabriel Basso. Given the ambitious plan, we’re eager to see how this prequel performs.
