Since the very beginning, the odds have been against Renny Harlin’s The Strangers trilogy.
It’s always a huge gamble when a studio opts to shoot three or more films back-to-back. The Strangers seemed doomed following the debut of Chapter 1, as the film received poor reviews and performed only moderately at the box-office.
Despite a flurry of reshoots, The Strangers – Chapter 2 debuted to critical scorn, and an even weaker box-office return, in September 2025.
With two failed films, it was heavily speculated that the third entry in the trilogy would go directly-to-streaming. However, Lionsgate surprised everyone, opting to press ahead with a full theatrical release. Promising the ultimate finale, an extensive promotional campaign hoped to hook audiences.
Despite Lionsgate’s undying loyalty to The Strangers trilogy, the property has ended with a whimper at the box-office.
Upon its February 6th opening, The Strangers – Chapter 3 made little impact with the public.
Debuting to a disappointing $3.4 million, Chapter 3 has become the lowest grossing entry in the franchise so far.
Internationally, the film failed to make an impact, grossing less than $1 million, for a worldwide total of $3.9 million. This saw the film open in eighth place, likely far from the finale Lionsgate was hoping for.
However, the weekend wasn’t a complete bust for the horror genre, as Sam Raimi’s Send Help retained the top spot for a second week. This makes Raimi’s critically lauded survival tale the best performing genre film of the year so far.
So, with The Strangers – Chapter 3 continuing the trilogy’s downward trend, it seems unlikely that we’ll hear anything new from this brand for quite some time.
