Known for its vast landscapes and beautiful views, Canada has a lot to offer in terms of scenic tourist attractions. However, the Great White North also caters to those of us who are more interested in dark tourism, as there are many areas that have been the setting for chilling stories and eerie experiences.

All kinds of horror-based entertainment are popular in Canada. Many internationally well-known horror movies have been set and filmed in the country, which has added to its haunting appeal. The majority of the Saw movie franchise was set around and filmed in Toronto, whereas the critically acclaimed Cabin in the Woods (2011) was filmed in Vancouver. The popularity of the horror genre can also be seen across other Canadian entertainment providers.

For example, the country’s own Supermassive, a video game developer, released the incredibly popular horror hit Until Dawn in 2015, which features a group of friends who have to fight to survive on the snowy Blackwood Mountain. Furthermore, perhaps slightly less intense, many online casinos listed at feature horror-inspired slot games such as ‘Howling Wolves’ and ‘Blood Suckers’, which have proved to be big hits amongst Canadian players.

Alongside horror-inspired media, there is no short of interest in live haunting entertainment in Canada, so let’s take a look at some of the scariest tours you can go on throughout Toronto and Vancouver.

The capital is filled with tours that cover some of the most haunting areas and events in Canada’s history. The Distillery District area is one of the busiest and most vibrant parts of Toronto today, however, the Spirits of the Distillery District ghost tour proves that this hasn’t always been the case. The tour shows you various buildings where supernatural occurrences are said to have taken place, and the expert guide describes to you all the horrifying details. Another stand-out area of interest is Black Creek Pioneer Village, which is a place notoriously known for its paranormal experiences. Many different ghost tours and walks have taken place here over the years as it’s such a great area of interest to all horror fans. A city usually well known for its stunning nature and luscious greenery, Vancouver also has a dark side that can be uncovered through different tours. The Lost Souls of Gastown Walking Tour takes participants back in time through some of Vancouver’s darkest and most gruesome moments. You’ll get to discover old sites and streets that haven’t changed in centuries, and will be told of the chilling stories that are said to have occurred. If this tour sounds appealing, you can find out more at

If cemeteries are more your thing, the Haunted Vancouver Trolley Tour takes you through eerie areas of the city before stopping off in Mountain View Cemetery, where you can visit some of the graves belonging to the tortured souls of Vancouver’s past. If you aren’t able to get to Toronto or Vancouver, don’t be disheartened – there is no shortage of haunting experiences throughout many areas in Canada. Ottawa, Kingston, and Montreal are just some other cities that offer a range of experiences to provide you with your horror fix.
