The Killer Piñata is back – and this time he’s got a mate.
“Bride of the Killer Piñata” is packed with laughs, gore, action, and tons of spooky season fun. Didn’t see the original? Don’t worry – the team at Angry Mule Films makes sure that new and old fans alike can dive right into this delightful horror-comedy, which should definitely be on your watchlist!
This surprising sequel picks up 10 years after the events of the first film, with the final girl and her wife living a staid life as parents in the suburbs. While they’re settling into their new routine, the Killer Piñata has other ideas …
Fans of the first film will be delighted to find the heart and humour have remained intact, while the production value has been taken up several notches. The score by Ryan Aldrich is second-to-none and the performances are filled with solid acting by Chicago talent, including faces we’ve seen in other Angry Mule productions (Eliza-Jane Morris, Joette Waters, Johnny Kalita) and scene-stealing comedic performances by newcomers Casey James Brockway and Eric Bays.
You can see how the budget for this film was ramped up from the first one, particularly in terms of the effects. We won’t spoil the fun, but there’s a terrific scene right up front that will show viewers what they have in store – courtesy of the talents of Dark Alley Special Effects.
“Bride of the Killer Piñata” stands out in a sea of b-movie horror-comedies not only for its performances and production, but for its heart and thoughtful storytelling. While the runtime of nearly 2 hours sounds bulky for this genre, the creativity in the filmmaking makes it fly by. The movie is interspersed with little vignettes like flashbacks and a beautiful shadow puppet scene, which make it a much more engaging watch than your typical b-horror.
Long story short – check out this flick. You’ll laugh, you’ll scream, you’ll watch it again.
It recently completed its festival run, including screenings at the Nevermore Film Festival (where it was nominated for Best Director and Best Actress), Shockfest, and the Soho Horror Film Festival, among others. It was also nominated for Best Horror Film by the Chicago Indie Awards.
