“Dead is just a word…”
The Grabber is back, and somehow, he’s an even more sinister force to be reckoned with.
In the first trailer for Scott Derrickson’s The Black Phone 2, we learn that death “is just a word,” and nothing will stop The Grabber in his quest.
Re-introducing us to Mason Thames’ Finney, The Black Phone 2 boasts a considerably bleaker tone than its predecessor. Set against a snowy backdrop, the trailer sees Finney attending a youth camp for troubled teens.
At the same time, his psychic sister, Gwen is being tormented by a familiar face. Despite the teens believing The Grabber dead, he has seemingly risen again as a purely supernatural force. Using a phone booth to torment the teens, and eventually seeming to manifest in the real world, it’s made clear there’s unfinished business afoot.
Paying homage to countless classics of the genre, the trailer for The Black Phone 2 has generated considerable hype. The snowy setting has been compared to the likes of The Shining and 1983’s Curtains.
Similarly, The Grabber’s new manifestation as a supernatural entity has drawn comparisons to A Nightmare on Elm Street’s Freddy Krueger.
Homages to Derrickson’s 2012 hit Sinister have also been noted, with the inclusion of some quick cuts, clearly shot on super8 film. However, how this element ties into the movie’s plot remains unknown.
Mason Thames, Ethan Hawke, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, and Miguel Mora will reprise their roles from the 2021 original. Demián Bichir, Adrianna Rivas, and Anna Lore will also star in undisclosed roles.
