The First Purge, the 4th instalment in the powerhouse franchise launched by James DeMonaco in 2013, hits US Theaters on Wednesday July 4th, timed to coincide with Independence Day. But 2018 will bring more than just one purge to horror fans. In addition to the prequel, there’s a TV series in the works.
The Purge is a 10-episode series set to debut on September 4th on USA. According to Collider:
“Blumhouse and Universal will unleash The First Purge, which will reveal how the New Founding Fathers convinced a nation to put their sinister machination into practice, and later this year, we’ll get to dive deep into the horrors and drama of The Purge with a 10-episode event series that follows an ensemble of characters through one horrifying Purge night and how they got there in the first place. Set between the events of The First Purge and James DeMonaco‘s film trilogy, The Purge series offers an in-depth look at the terrifying national tradition in full swing.”

Based on the hit movie franchise from Blumhouse productions, THE PURGE revolves around a 12-hour period when all crime, including murder, is legal. Set in a dystopian America ruled by a totalitarian political party, the series follows several seemingly unrelated characters living in a small city. Tying them all together is a mysterious saviour who’s impeccably equipped for everything the night throws at them. As the clock winds down with their fates hanging in the balance, each character is forced to reckon with their pasts as they discover how far they will go to survive the night.
From Blumhouse Television and Universal Cable Productions, THE PURGE is written and executive produced by the film franchise creator James DeMonaco and led by Jason Blum. Additionally, the entire team behind the blockbuster franchise are on board to executive produce: Michael Bay with Brad Fuller and Andrew Form under the Platinum Dunes banner and Sebastien K. Lemercier. Thomas Kelly serves as executive producer/showrunner of the series. Emmy® and Golden Globe® award-winner Anthony Hemingway will direct and executive produce the premiere episode.
