Universal, Blumhouse, Morgan Creek, and Peacock are working on a new film in The Exorcist franchise that is intended to launch a trilogy, but it has been reported that production has unexpectedly paused. According to sources, this is due to a health issue involving star Leslie Odom Jr., who is playing the father of a possessed child.
This shutdown is “early and no cost insignificant,” but Deadline notes that the team hope to resume production in January.
David Gordon Green (Halloween) is directing the new film, which marks the return of Ellen Burstyn to the franchise. The cast also includes Ann Down (Hereditary).
The Exorcist is slated to return to our screens on October 13th, 2023. This will be the first big-screen entry in the franchise since 2005’s Dominion: Prequel to The Exorcist.
