The end of an era is upon us…
As confirmed by series producer James Wan via an emotional Instagram post, The Conjuring: Last Rites has wrapped filming.
The fourth instalment in the series’ main storyline, the films tell the stories of real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. With the three Conjuring instalments plus their multiple spin-offs grossing over $2 billion worldwide, fans are always eager for more.
However, prior to production commencing on The Conjuring: Last Rites, Wan, alongside director Michael Chaves, confirmed that the film would be the final instalment of Ed and Lorraine Warren’s story.
This was subsequently backed up by actors Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson, who have become horror icons as the husband-and-wife ghostbusting team.
Now, Ed and Lorraine Warren have officially completed their “final battle,” with Wan stating:
“Always good to see and hang out with old friends. Gonna miss everyone. End of an era.”
Wan’s sentiments were echoed by cast members Vera Farmiga and Shannon Kook in the comments, both expressing their affection and appreciation for their time on The Conjuring movies.
Whilst little is known about The Conjuring: Last Rites, we do know that filming occurred in Atlanta, Georgia over the course of the past six weeks. Besides Farmiga and Wilson, the only new cast members confirmed are Bohemian Rapsody star Ben Hardy, and actress Mia Tomlinson. The pair are expected to play the Warren’s daughter Judy and her husband Tony Spera.
It has been heavily speculated from casting breakdowns that Last Rites will tell the story of the Smurl Family haunting. This case took place in West Pittston, Pennsylvania, spanning many years prior to The Warren’s involvement in the mid to late eighties.
However, this remains unconfirmed, so we’ll be on the lookout for any concrete plot details.
A lot of people will be sad to see Ed and Lorraine leave the big screen, us included.
The Conjuring: Last Rites is expected to release on September 6th 2025.
