STX Entertainment have secured the rights to period possession film Salem Village, set unsurprisingly soon after the infamous Salem Witch Trials. The film that immediately comes to mind when thinking about a film like this is the critically-acclaimed upcoming British horror The Witch. Obviously seeing an opportunity to take advantage of the current interest in period-set horror, STX Entertainment is probably hoping it can garner an interest based on these comparisons.
STX recently distributed the surprising horror-thriller The Gift and is set to release the US remake of The Secret in Their Eyes and Lauren Cohan-starrer The Boy, which is set for release on 22nd February 2016.
Synopsis:
A young woman starts to show signs of possession. Desperate for the truth, the town’s elders put their faith into a man of science to uncover what is truly happening in Salem and put an end to the terrifying events plaguing the town.” A young woman starts to show signs of possession. Horror films set during early periods of history seem to be creepier than those set in modern day; there’s definitely something spookier about the atmosphere. Here’s to hoping that Salem Village will be a worthy competitor for The Witch; proving that horror films don’t need to be found-footage or modern to make a smash.
