Outside of his signature role as Glenn Rhee in a little show called The Walking Dead, actor Steven Yeun has remained relatively absent from screens both big and small. He starred in 2014 sci-fi drama I Origins, but has otherwise chalked up just a few passing TV roles on the non-zombie-slaying side of his career. This trend may be set to change however, with Yeun set to star in upcoming sci-fi/horror/action thriller Mayhem.
The genre mash-up is directed by Joe Lynch, who began his directing career with Wrong Turn 2: Dead End back in 2007 and has since helmed fantasy comedy Knights of Badassdom and Salma Hayek-starring actioner Everly. He also stars in Adam Green’s TV horror comedy Holliston.
Yeun stars alongside Samara Weaving, a rising star who cut her teeth on a four-year stint on Home and Away in her native Australia. She has since appeared as Heather in Ash Vs Evil Dead, and has McG’s upcoming horror The Babysitter seeing release this year, and Australian zombie flick Before Dawn headed our way in 2017.
Mayhem’s plot concerns a virus capable of making people act out their wildest impulses that infects a corporate law office on the very day attorney Derek Saunders (Yeun) is framed by a co-worker and wrongfully fired. Trapped in the quarantined building, our hero is forced to savagely fight tooth and nail for not only his job, but also his life.
Director Lynch told THR this week: “It’s not every day you get to throw action, sci-fi, horror, drama, and even satire in the genre blender and hit ‘puree,’ but Matias [Caruso]’s script, combined with a gung-ho cast and crew – especially Steven and Samara, will make for a deliciously dangerous and exciting cinematic smoothie… with a hell of a kick.”
Principal photography on Mayhem is due to begin later this month on location in Belgrade, Serbia.
