Following last week’s news that Sony’s Until Dawn adaption would not mirror the hit game, the company faced considerable backlash.
With the announcement that David F. Sandberg’s movie would feature entirely new characters, and a plot only “paying homage,” many fans of the game were outraged.
Now, it seems Sony is attempting to quell the backlash, as the studio have released an unexpected first look at Until Dawn.
Although brief, the featurette showcases a few clips from the adaption. However, most importantly, Sandberg breaks down the movie’s new plotline, letting us know what to expect.
Sandberg explains:
“One of the creative things the game did is that people make different choices and die in different ways. The movie has this mechanic, where things start over and they get to try again. Every time they come back to life; it’s like they’re in a new horror genre. To survive, they have to make it Until Dawn.”
So, whilst not adapting the game directly, Until Dawn will employ its “choose your own adventure” style. Seeming to share a lot in common with the likes of Happy Death Day, it appears the characters are stuck in a time loop, should they die before dawn. If Sandberg’s words are to be taken literally, that opens the door to multiple possible fates, from a slasher killer, to a mythical monster. We don’t know about you, but to us a movie spanning various sub-genres sounds pretty intriguing.
Further shedding light on the movie’s different course, Sony released an official synopsis for Until Dawn:
“One year after her sister Melanie mysteriously disappeared, Clover and her friends head into the remote valley where she vanished in search of answers. Exploring an abandoned visitor center, they find themselves stalked by a masked killer and horrifically murdered one by one…only to wake up and find themselves back at the beginning of the same evening. Trapped in the valley, they’re forced to relive the nightmare again and again – only each time the killer threat is different, each more terrifying than the last. Hope dwindling, the group soon realizes they have a limited number of deaths left, and the only way to escape is to survive until dawn.”
Until Dawn stars Ella Rubin, Michael Cimino, Ji-young Yoo, and Odessa A’zion. The movie will hit screens on April 25th 2025, and a trailer is expected soon, so stay tuned!
