It was reported earlier this month that Showtime was considering ditching its planned second season of Dexter: New Blood in favour of a prequel series. That turned out to be only half true. According to the Wall Street Journal, Showtime has officially ordered up a prequel series called Dexter: Origins—but it’s moving ahead with more Dexter: New Blood as well!
As noted in WSJ, Dexter: Origins “will be set in Dexter’s hometown of Miami, and will touch on stories of real-life serial killers of the time period.” The series will begin with Dexter graduating college and joining Miami Metro during a period when Miami was a hotbed of serial killing. We’ll also learn more about Dexter’s family, including the still-alive Harry, and meet younger versions of many characters from the original series.
As for Dexter: New Blood, the second season will go ahead as planned, shifting focus to Dexter’s teenage son, Harrison (Jack Alcott). After killing his father, Harrison flees to New York City where he must wrestle with his own violent nature and whether, like his father, he too is compelled to kill.
And if a double dose of Dexter wasn’t enough for you, WSJ adds that “Showtime is also exploring separate spinoffs based on the back stories of compelling Dexter characters, including the Trinity Killer.” We’ll bring you more news of all things Dexter as we hear them.
