Actress Sarah Michelle Gellar is having quite the resurgence of late.
First, she emerged back on the small screen with supporting roles in two critically lauded shows, then came her epic big screen cameo in 2025’s I Know What You Did Last Summer.
However, there’s one project fans are eager to know more about, but so far Gellar has remained tight-lipped.
Announced early last year, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale will see Gellar reprise her iconic role as Buffy Summers after 23 years.
However, whilst Gellar and filmmaker Chloé Zhao crafted a pilot episode ordered by Hulu, nothing has been heard since that wrapped production this past summer.
Recently, Gellar shed light on why progress on Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale has been slow. According to Gellar, it’s all about getting the show just right, and everything must meet her very high standards:
“I know this seems like it’s taking a long time, and it’s because unless we are sure that it is exactly what we set out to do and that it makes sense to do it, we don’t want to sell you the legacy by not. When I know it’s perfect, then it will be out there, but I won’t do it unless I know it can be that.”
Gellar also elaborated on what fans can expect from New Sunnydale, stressing the show is not relying on nostalgia and seeks to tell a worthwhile new story:
“It’s not a sequel, it’s not a reboot — it’s a continuation. It’s about where [Buffy Summers] is now in this world and what is this world that Buffy lives in with her and without her. So, it’s not a reboot, it’s not picking up with all of the same characters right away. It is not like a sequel… That’s why the name was even important to me — Buffy: New Sunnydale. It’s Buffy, but it’s also something else.”
However, Gellar kept quiet on plot details, continuing to drip feed fans information.
Currently, only the cast of the pilot is known, with Firestarter actress Ryan Kira Armstrong taking the lead.
It is unknown if Hulu have ordered further episodes after seeing the pilot. However, Gellar’s words suggest work is ongoing, and further episodes are ahead.
