We feared for horror icon Sarah Michelle Gellar when her Paramount+ series Wolf Pack was cancelled.
A second season was on the cards, but the streaming service instead decided to nix the show due to strike-related delays. Gellar’s return to horror heralded much fanfare, given the genre made the actress a cultural icon with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Consequently, it was disappointing when the series was dumped, as it seemed a great chance for a comeback.
However, in what the industry is calling “the ultimate consolation prize,” Paramount+ have cast Gellar in their highly anticipated prequel series Dexter: Original Sin.
Based on a series of highly successful books, Dexter ran for eight seasons on Showtime, and told of Dexter Morgan, a vigilante serial killer targeting other murderers. Following its 2013 conclusion, the series was rebooted for a limited-series sequel in 2020, entitled Dexter: New Blood.
Now, Showtime has decided it’s time to explore the origins of the man with the questionable morals.
Already drawing a hugely impressive cast, Gellar’s inclusion is the cherry on top for Original Sin. Christian Slater, Patrick Dempsey, and Molly Brown have all signed on, whilst Irish actor Patrick Gibson has been cast in the titular role. Slater will play Dexter’s father Harry Morgan, and Brown his sister Debra.
Gellar will appear in a guest capacity, playing Miami CSI chief Tanya Martin, Dexter’s new boss.
Of Gellar’s casting, Showtime had the following to say in a statement:
“Sarah Michelle Gellar is a pop culture icon who perfectly rounds out our best-in-class cast featuring Christian Slater and Patrick Dempsey among others. We’re thrilled to have her return to the Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios family and join the origin story of the Dexter franchise.”
The show takes us to 1991, and explores how and why Dexter Morgan took the path he did.
Currently with no set air date, Dexter: Original Sin will stream on Paramount+, following the studio’s merger with Showtime.
