It was reported in January 2022 that a sequel to 2021’s Mortal Kombat reboot had been greenlit by Warner Bros., despite the film’s lukewarm box-office performance. Since then, everything appeared to have gone quiet until a slew of announcements surprised us recently. Now a further piece falls into place with word circulating that The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Tati Gabrielle is “in final talks” to take on the pivotal role of Jade.
Gabrielle’s career has been on the upswing since 2017, when she landed a main role in the series The 100. Since then, she has portrayed Prudence Blackwood in all three seasons of Netflix’s hit The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, starred in 2022’s Uncharted opposite Tom Holland and secured a leading role in the last two seasons of You, also for Netflix. Undoubtedly, the as-yet-untitled Mortal Kombat sequel will boost Gabrielle’s profile further.
Alongside Gabrielle, it was announced last month that The Boys star Karl Urban will be taking on the role of fan favourite Johnny Cage, with the film expected to shoot in June this year and run until September. Reboot director Simon McQuoid is expected to helm the film, from a script by The Exorcist’s Jeremy Slater.
It seems as though things are quietly but quickly coming together on this sequel, and we will keep a lookout for any other major developments to report soon.
