Russell Crowe returns to battle the forces of darkness once again, only this time, he’s not doing the saving…
The Exorcism’s first trailer leaves us in little doubt what the movie is… a loving tribute to 1973’s The Exorcist. If this couldn’t have been gleaned by the project’s working title of The Georgetown Project, the trailer leaves it undeniable.
Crowe stars as Tony, an actor known for horror roles, who is brought in to play an Exorcist as a last-minute replacement. In multiple nods to William Friedkin’s classic, we see a sparse movie set, with only a sterile looking bed, we are then clued in that the actor Tony replaced died… “mysteriously.” This is undoubtedly a reference to the high number of deaths that plagued Friedkin’s feature four decades ago.
The Exorcism seems like standard possession-movie fodder, giving Crowe a chance to play the other side of the coin, following his turn in The Pope’s Exorcist. Ryan Simpkins stars as Crowe’s concerned daughter, unsure if her father is spiralling back into addiction, or if something more sinister is at play.
From Vertical Entertainment, Miramax, and Shudder, The Exorcism is directed by Joshua John Miller. Miller is the son of The Exorcist star Jason Miller and has a history with the genre, with roles in Halloween III and Near Dark.
