In news out of Las Vegas’ Cinema Con, we’re hearing that a remake of 1981’s classic werewolf movie The Howling is happening.
Although rumoured to be in the works for several years, this is the first time a remake has officially been announced.
The news comes from StudioCanal, and was announced during their showcase of upcoming material at Cinema Con.
Plot details were not disclosed, and it is understood that the project is in very early development.
1981’s The Howling was adapted from the 1977 novel of the same name by Gary Brandner. Grossing $20 million on a meagre budget of $1.7 million, the werewolf tale launched the careers of both Joe Dante and Rob Botin.
The Howling would go on to spawn seven sequels between 1985 and 2008, most of which have been derided for their poor quality.
However, perhaps this upcoming remake will change the franchise’s poor reputation amongst the horror community.
Of course, this is not the first time a remake of The Howling has been rumoured to be in the works. It filmmaker Andy Muschietti has previously voiced his desire to remake The Howling. At the time it was rumoured that Netflix were involved, but nothing ever came of the project.
It is currently unknown if Muschietti is attached to the remake afoot at StudioCanal.
