A reboot of John Carpenter’s beloved 1981 film Escape from New York is in the works over at 20th Century Studios, and Deadline reports that filmmaking collective Radio Silence (Scream, Ready or Not) are at the helm!
Carpenter will serve as an executive producer on the film. Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman will produce alongside Radio Silence.
In the original film, which was set in the futuristic world of 1997, Kurt Russell played Snake Plissken, a convicted bank robber sent to rescue the President of the United States after the man’s helicopter crashed in Manhattan, which had been converted into a giant maximum security prison.
There’s no word yet on what approach will be taken with the reboot, but Deadline notes that the search for a writer is reportedly underway.
Radio Silence is made up of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett, and Chad Villella. The team recently wrapped production on the as-yet-untitled Scream 6, which is set to release next March.
