The Predator franchise continues to go from strength to strength.
After topping the domestic box-office with a $40 million opening, Dan Tractenberg’s film Predator: Badlands netted the highest domestic opening for the series.
Earning an additional $40 million internationally, the movie easily became the highest Predator debut worldwide.
Now, Trachtenberg’s dystopian sequel has collected another achievement to add to its list of accolades.
Following its second weekend in theatres, Badlands domestic total rose to an impressive $66.3 million. This means that Badlands now stands as the highest-grossing Predator film at the domestic box-office. This bests the 1987 original, and its 1992 sequel.
Of course, this honour excludes the Alien Vs. Predator films, as they are considered crossover/spin-off films.
Worldwide, Predator: Badlands has grossed $137 million, currently the second-highest grossing of the series. It is bested only by 2016’s The Predator, which netted a total of $160 million by the end of its run.
However, despite Badlands dropping 60% in its second weekend, it is entirely possible it will surpass The Predator’s final total.
So, it seems that 20th Century Studios and Disney made the right choice giving Badlands a full theatrical run.
Discussions of a sequel continue to be ongoing, but nothing has been officially announced as of this writing.
We’ll let you know if a certain legacy character from the 1987 original inks a deal to bring about that rumoured return.
