The new incarnation of Pet Sematary isn’t even out yet, but producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is already thinking about what comes next—or, more accurately, what came before. In a recent interview, di Bonaventura stated that he thinks audiences are more likely to see a prequel than a straightforward sequel.
This would be a break with tradition; Mary Lambert’s 1989 adaptation of the classic Stephen King novel spawned a weird but fun sequel in 1992. But di Bonaventura has expressed an interest in exploring what happened before the ill-fated Creed family moved into the neighbourhood, some of which is detailed in the book.
This is all still hypothetical, of course. But if the success of recent Stephen King adaptations is anything to go on, Pet Sematary 2019 is almost guaranteed to be a success, so a prequel or sequel will surely soon follow.
