As part of the 7th annual Women in Horror Recognition Month, writer-director Patricia Chica (Rockabilly 514, Ceramic Tango, A Tricky Treat) has created a horror short to be included in an anthology curated by the Soska Sisters (American Mary, Hellevator).
The anthology set of films have been created with the idea of giving blood, with the identical twins hoping to entice viewers to bleed for a good cause. When speaking about her contribution to the anthology, Chica said, “The concept of this short came to me through meditation, and the visuals, I guess are remnants of a past life being involved with the Montreal burlesque and fetish subcultures. It’s exciting to me to see Tonya Kay and Tiffany Shepis getting the tone so playfully right.”
A primal and sensual dance is performed by a burlesque artist on stage to the delight of a blood thirsty audience, who watch in awe as she makes a splash to cure her ills. Bloody Burlesque presents a conceptual burlesque performance with a twist that reminds the audience that “It’s in You to Give.”
We had a sneak peak at Bloody Burlesque and its direction is simple and effective. Featuring a bloody burlesque show – surprisingly! – a woman scrawled with words such as “cancer”, “wound” and “anguish” uses a bucket of blood to rinse them away. The sentiment is obvious, showing that blood can quite literally erase the pain suffered by many.
Bloody Burlesque features Scream Queens Tonya Kay (Silver Lake, Creep Van), Tiffany Shepis (Sharknado 2) and Michelle Romano (Milwood). An expanded version of the short will be presented during the 2016/2017 season under the title Crimson Dance.
