Pascal Laugier’s 2009 film Martyrs is, arguably, one of the greatest horror films ever made. Whatever your opinion on the film, you can’t deny that it is a brutal and unforgettable viewing experience.
It’s sometimes difficult to stomach US versions of films not originally in the English language and, despite this, Martyrs is one that we are particularly keen to get our hands on. The general consensus is that it doesn’t meet the standard of the original, but that’s really no surprise. The one good thing that comes from remakes is that they can potentially introduce the original film to a new audience, and the more people who see Martyrs, the better!
We have a new image from the film below and it gives us a glimpse in to the nightmarish torture Martyrs is so infamously known for.
Synopsis:
Ten-year-old Lucie flees from the isolated warehouse where she has been held prisoner. Deeply traumatised, she is plagued by awful night terrors at the orphanage that takes her in. Her only comfort comes from Anna, a girl her own age. Nearly a decade later and still haunted by demons, Lucie finally tracks down the family that tortured her. As she and Anna move closer to the agonising truth, they find themselves trapped in a nightmare – if they cannot escape, a martyr’s fate awaits them…
Martyrs will be getting a limited theatrical release in the USA on 22nd January 2016, releasing very soon after on DVD, Blu-ray and VOD on 4th February 2016 thanks to Anchor Bay.
