Shockingly, it’s been 15 years since Freddy Krueger last graced the big screen.
Although 2010’s remake A Nightmare on Elm Street isn’t widely loved, it currently stands as the last official entry in the long-running franchise.
For a series that was inescapable during its 1980s heyday, a gap so long seems unthinkable. Although Freddy Krueger actor Robert Englund has ruled out returning, many other names have expressed their willingness to portray dream demon Freddy Krueger.
As New Line Cinema, often referred to as “the house that Freddy built, prepared to present at Cinema-Con, the question of Nightmare hung heavy in the air.
So, will there be a new A Nightmare on Elm Street movie coming any time soon? Sadly, no. However, that’s not to say there haven’t been efforts at New Line to resurrect the property. According to studio president Richard Berner:
“We hope so, we really want to do it. But, it’s complicated, because of the rights.”
Berner is undoubtedly referring to the fact that the rights to A Nightmare on Elm Street are split between New Line and the estate of creator Wes Craven. The Craven Estate own the domestic and character rights, whilst New Line Cinema owns the international franchise rights.
And whilst The Craven Estate is said to be “fielding pitches” for a new Nightmare project, both parties must agree on a project before it can move forward.
So, until that day comes, it seems Freddy Krueger will remain off our screens. However, anything is possible, should the right story come along.
