2024 celebrated the fortieth anniversary of the classic Christmas horror-comedy Gremlins.
Telling the tale of the Mogwai, a creature that transforms into a mischievous gremlin when fed after midnight, Gremlins became an instant classic.
A largely unsuccessful sequel followed in 1990, and for many years, that was all we heard from the series.
However, in recent years, two animated prequel television shows have reignited interest in the brand. Now, it seems that this was all a calculated ploy by rights holder Warner Bros, in a bid to set the stage for a new film.
Word reaches us that Chris Columbus, writer of the 1984 original, has penned a new chapter of the Gremlins series.
Columbus first spoke of this script in 2017, floating the possibility of a new movie, saying:
“I’m really proud of the script. It is as twisted and dark as anything, so we’ll see. It’s always a budgetary conversation when we’re going to shoot it. I wanted to go back to the really twisted sensibility of the first movie. I found that was a very easy place for me to fall back into and start writing again so hopefully we’ll see that movie soon.”
Now, we’re hearing that Warner Bros are set to green-light Columbus’ script, on the proviso that he also pens a sequel to 1985’s The Goonies.
The studio is keen to capitalise on the popularity of legacy sequels, and draw audiences in with a huge dose of nostalgia.
So, whilst details are sparse, it looks likely we’ll see the Gremlins returning to the big screen soon! We’ll watch this story closely and report any further updates.
