Is our favourite “friend to the end” about to make a return?
It’s been a year since SyFy and USA cancelled the Chucky television series after three seasons, to huge protest from franchise fans.
The Child’s Play franchise has had many peaks and valleys over its almost four-decade run, but it has become and undisputed classic. Undoubtedly, Chucky the killer doll ranks amongst the elite of horror icons, alongside the likes of Dracula, Michael Myers, and Freddy Krueger.
After seven mainline movies, a 2019 remake, and a cancelled television series, many are asking “what’s next for Child’s Play and Chucky?”
Well, now we may have our first hint that Chucky is on his way back to screens in some form.
Reputable trade Production Weekly lists a project currently in the works under the “Child’s Play” banner.
Whilst very little is known, this at least confirms that the brand is still active following the television cancellation.
However, what remains unclear is if this new project is part of the franchise’s mainline output, or if a sequel to the 2019 remake is in the works.
2019’s AI influenced Child’s Play remake stood apart from Don Mancini’s universe due to rights issues. Grossing $45 million on a budget of $10 million, director Lars Klevberg had previously spoken of his hopes the new Child’s Play lore would continue. So, is this what is coming our way?
If not, has Chucky master Don Mancini gotten a new feature rolling, continuing his expansive universe following the television show? Mancini has been vocal about his wishes to continue the Chucky brand, and is said to be working on various projects. Is new Chucky content on the way?
