From Gerald’s Game to Mr. Harrigan’s Phone, and more, it’s safe to say Netflix and Stephen King is a combination that equals success.
Now, the streaming giant is set to resurrect one of King’s classic properties for a brand-new adaption.
Originally published in 1981, Cujo tells the tale of a mother and son trapped in their car by a rabid Saint Bernard. With their car no use, they must choose between facing off against the dog, or dying in their sweltering vehicle.
The harrowing tale was then adapted into a feature film in 1983. The Lewis Teague directed-flick performed moderately well for Warner Bros, becoming the third highest grossing horror film of 1983. Actress Dee Wallace-Stone was singled out for praise, for her emotionally raw lead performance as a frantic mother.
Gaining cult classic status, Cujo has become one of the most well-regarded King adaptions of the period. With that in mind, it’s little surprise Netflix have opted to give the material a modern update.
Although we have little information to go on, we do know It producer Roy Lee is spearheading the project for Netflix.
According to Lee, the project is being “pitched to writers” by Netflix, although no writer or director is currently attached to the project.
So, with the continued popularity of Stephen King on the big and small screen of late, will Netflix have another success with an updated Cujo adaption?
