We’re not sure if we really want to see anything more from Universal’s critically derided Dark Universe, but an interesting post on Instagram suggests there might be more to come.
Writer Robert Vargas took to Instagram to share a meeting he had with the Dark Universe team, citing that “Monster things are in the works” with a teasing winking face at the end. He further said:
“Great meeting this morning with the amazing #DarkUniverse team. Thank you #Universal Exec, Holly Goline and Crash for the hospitality. Looking forward to contributing to the Universal Pictures legacy with my work.”
What work exactly could that be? Vargas is known for his writing work on children’s shows like Nella the Princess Knight and Henry Hugglemonster, as well as working on the storyboards for Little Bill and Wonder Pets. Steering into the monstrous world of Universal would be an intriguing step in a new direction for him, but perhaps that’s what the Dark Universe needs.
The Dark Universe failed almost instantly after the release of last year’s The Mummy with Tom Cruise and Sofia Boutella, resulting in Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan jumping ship. The Bride of Frankenstein with Angelina Jolie was set to follow The Mummy, but now Jolie is no longer attached and the 19th February 2019 release date has been scrapped.
I really want to stay positive, but what’s happened has certainly put a downer on anything in the Dark Universe going further. I suppose all we can do is watch this space.
