A few weeks ago, Blumhouse and Universal announced that acclaimed genre filmmaker Mike Flanagan would take on The Exorcist franchise.

With the director championing his vision as “a radical new take” on the mythology, audiences were cautiously curious. Now, we have our first major update since then, with Universal confirming that the film will release on June 13th 2026.

Plot details are being kept under wraps; however, the studio have been quick to note that Flanagan’s vision is not a sequel “in any way.”

This stern stance is likely an attempt to distance the project from 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer. The David Gordon Green-directed legacy sequel was panned by critics and performed only moderately at the box-office.

A sequel, The Exorcist: Deceiver, was announced for a June 2025 release, but quickly disappeared from the release roster. Subsequently, Green departed the project, with his legacy timeline seemingly being nixed.

Universal are clearly eager to turn a profit on the $500 million they’ve already funnelled into their Exorcist venture. So, is Mike Flanagan the man for the job? Will he break the curse and provide a financially successful Exorcist film post the 1973 original? We can’t wait to find out.
