Scream star Melissa Barerra has signed to star in The One alongside Renfield lead Nicholas Hoult, with project currently being shopped at Cannes.
Described as a “nightmarish horror about the romantic and psychological warfare waged by our beloved popular entertainment,” The One is pegged as an erotic horror and will shine a light on society’s ever-present obsession with reality television and dating shows.
“The One follows Taylor (Barrera), who makes a last-ditch effort to find love by becoming a contestant on a reality dating show. Now down to just herself and two other women competing to win the heart of Mason (Hoult), Taylor begins to feel the artifice of the show fade, and the game becomes terrifyingly real. Amidst the opulent beachfront setting, fairy-tale dates and ever-flowing champagne, pursuit turns into obsession and rivalry turns into treachery as reality itself blurs.”
Familiar faces from the genre are set to join our recognisable leads as All the Boys Love Mandy Lane star Lana Condor and The Lodge’s Riley Keough are also attached to the project.
Directed by duo Kevin Armento and Jaki Bradley and with Hoult serving as executive producer, The One certainly seems to have masses of potential. The project will mark Barrera’s third horror-centric project since taking the central role of Samantha Carpenter in the Scream franchise. The actress also has the horror-drama Your Monster and an untitled monster movie from Radio Silence in the pipeline. It seems she is taking her Scream Queen moniker very seriously.
Whilst details on The One are currently scant, we will bring you any further updates as they emerge.
