Whilst we still have quite a while to wait until we see Scream 7, the excitement for the sequel continues to buzz.
Although his return had long been a dream for fans, there was still palpable shock when actor Matthew Lillard announced he would reprise his role of Stu Macher.
Although the Ghostface killer was eliminated during the 1996 original, the idea of Lillard returning simply refused to die.
Now, for the first time since joining the project, the actor has spoken on his return. Voicing his fear at such a risky story choice, Lillard stated:
“I will say, I can’t say anything about it, obviously. But I am very excited and slightly terrified to be back because all I can do is really screw up a legacy that we have. I could really suck, and so that’s my fear.”
The actor continued:
“My fear is that I come back and sort of punish something that I could never have touched and been just fine. I hope I don’t fuck it up for everyone.”
Given the universally positive response to the news of Lillard’s return, it seems highly unlikely the actor will sully Scream 7. We believe in you, Matthew!
Lillard joins a plethora of legacy characters set to return in Scream 7, including Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Mason Gooding, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Scott Foley.
The returnees will be bolstered by a sizeable cast of franchise newcomers, among them, Isabel May, Sam Rechner, McKenna Grace, Anna Camp, Asa Germann, and Ethan Embry.
Scream 7 is currently set to release on February 27th 2026. However, as we reported recently, that could be subject to change. Watch this space for any further updates.
