It’s been quite some time since we had an update on 20th Century Studios remake of the classic nineties thriller The Hand That Rocks the Cradle.
However, with the emergence of the first trailer for the project, it’s become obvious that this remake is aiming to differentiate itself from its source material.
Initially expected to be a straight-forward remake, the trailer reveals a tale of a disturbed woman looking to find a family to call her own… at any cost.
Maika Monroe stars as Polly Murphy, a young woman who’s seemingly a perfect fit for the job of nannying the Morales children. However, she’s no ordinary caretaker, as the trailer details a plethora of abuse, manipulation, and self-hatred as her campaign unfolds.
Seemingly, Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Claire Morales is the only one wise to Polly’s intentions to steal her family. Of course, that makes her the ultimate target.
This is quite the change from the content of the 1992 original, in which Rebecca De Mornay masqueraded as a nanny as a means of revenge. Having lost her husband and suffered a devastating miscarriage, she targets the family she deems responsible.
From the trailer, it’s clear actress Maika Monroe is set to deliver another powerhouse performance. Evoking the infamous “psycho-biddy” performances of the sixties, Monroe seems to delight in playing homicidally unhinged.
Alongside the trailer, we’ve also gotten that all-important release date, as well as the news that the movie will be a Hulu-original.
The Hand that Rocks the Cradle is set to premiere on the streaming service on October 23rd, debuting as part of their yearly “Hulu-ween” line-up.
