Lionsgate has signed on to move forward with a social media-thriller titled XOXO, which has been in the works for 5 years. The script has been written by Mark Heyman (Black Swan, The Skeleton Twins) and is to be produced by Black Swan-director Darren Aronofsky, along with Michael London from Groundswell Productions.
The film was originally tapped to be directed by George Nolfi, but has since acquired and Bryan Woods and Scott Beck who worked together on 2015’s Nightlight which tackled the theme of teen suicide. This XOXO is not to be confused with the Netflix original EDM film XOXO; just to make that clear.
XOXO will follow an engaged man who begins an affair with a woman he meets online, but he is soon drawn in to a dark reality. The success of Black Mirror seems to be spawning films that explore the dangers of technology and the internet, so the 5-year wait for a release of XOXO could be a blessing in disguise that has led to its release being at the perfect time.
Keep your eyes peeled for cast announcements and a release date for XOXO soon.
