KEVIN WILLIAMSON RULES OUT DIRECTING “SCREAM 8”

Posted on: March 19th, 2026

Despite initial reports, Kevin Williamson has confirmed that he doesn’t intend to return to direct an eighth Scream installment.

Reports before the release of Scream 7 suggested that Williamson would serve as director on an eighth film Paramount was prepping.

However, in a recent interview, Williamson ruled out returning to the director’s chair saying:
“I think the next Scream I’ll probably step back.”

Elaborating on why he wishes to take a back seat after his mammoth success with Scream 7, Williamson continued:
“I want to direct another film that I have written. That is just waiting for me to find the time to direct. Right now, I’m working on a couple TV shows. Maybe I’ll direct one of those. Who knows.”

The filmmaker remains optimistic that an eighth Scream movie will happen, but said he wanted to hand the franchise off to a new visionary:
“I’m hopeful there will be a Scream 8. I have some ideas of where it could go, but I’m anxious to see what another storyteller could do with it. It’s nice to be part of the Scream family. That doesn’t mean I always have to be front and centre. I don’t always have to write or direct… other people can take the reins. And I’m excited to see what other storytellers come up with.”

So, Williamson’s words contradict reports that Paramount were prepping Scream 8 for an Atlanta based shoot with Williamson at the helm.

However, given the fact that Scream 7 has grossed over $150 million worldwide, it seems obvious there will be further installments, with or without Williamson.

An update on the future of the Scream franchise is expected soon, so we’ll report back once we have any further information.
