As we reported back in March, Sony Pictures issued a press release, seemingly confirming that a new chapter of the I Know What You Did Last Summer saga was in the works. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson was on board to direct and allegedly already had a script complete. Most exciting of all, attached to the announcement was the word that original stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr were “in talks” to return.
However, it quickly came to light that Sony were stretching the truth a little with their announcement. Prinze Jr soon called out word he was to return as “smoke” to drum up hype, and that he hadn’t been offered anything.
Since then, everything regarding the project seems to have gone radio silent.
However, this past week, we finally got Jennifer Love Hewitt’s stance on the supposed reboot. Whilst appearing on the Inside of You podcast with Urban Legend and Smallville actor Michael Rosenbaum, Hewitt was asked about possibly returning to the role of Julie James for the first time.
“100%,” Hewitt responded when questioned by the host. “I loved making those movies. I’d do it. For sure.”
While this is encouraging, the actress makes no reference to if she was offered the project, as per the March 2023 article. However, now that both parties have seemingly confirmed their willingness, perhaps Sony’s fib of a press release has had the intended effect?
Jennifer Love Hewitt’s willingness to return to the slasher fold comes just days after Sony Pictures confirmed their intentions to resurrect their Screen Gems label. Their long-range plan consists of “making horror movies a priority,” under the watchful eye of writer-director Gary Dauberman.
Surely a Last Summer reboot with legacy cast members attached would be the perfect project to relaunch Screen Gems new horror-heavy output with?
This is a project that we’re just going to have to keep an eye on to see if it materialises. The appetite is there for the taking, but will Sony follow through?
