Filming is already underway for Sony’s I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot, but there’s still one vital cast member missing.
Following the confirmation that original cast member Freddie Prinze Jr had signed on, fans hoped that his legacy co-star Jennifer Love Hewitt wouldn’t be far behind.
However, with Prinze Jr now in Australia for shooting, Hewitt is still nowhere in sight. This has led fans to worry that Sony Pictures have been unable to reach a deal with the legacy star, despite her willingness to return.
However, Hewitt has recently taken to the press to quell the fan concern. Speaking in a recent interview, the actress addressed her absence from the cast:
“We’re so close, that’s all I’m gonna say. I feel like the actual audience now is like, ‘What are you waiting for, huh?'”
The actress further elaborated that the main reason she hasn’t signed on yet is due to her busy television schedule starring in the hit medical drama 9-1-1.:
“It’s such a delicate thing, because we’re trying to deal with the 9-1-1 schedule and the movie schedule, so we’re just trying to figure it out and make it happen.”
Hewitt also explained that she’s been keenly involved in making the role worthwhile, not just a glorified cameo. The star assured fans she is conscious of their worries, and is confident she’ll appear:
“If I’m going to come back 27 years later, I don’t want to just be in it for five seconds, like, I don’t want it to just be like that thing that’s like, ‘Oh, well, there’s the ghost of I Know What You Did past, here she is.’ So, I want to be able to carve out time to really be in it for people and to have it matter. So, we’re working on it. We’re so close. The announcement will be so exciting when it happens, for me as well, and I’m hoping it’s soon.”
So, although she hasn’t officially joined the project, Hewitt seems hopeful she will, if the scheduling can be arranged.
I Know What You Did Last Summer is currently underway, and stars Madelyn Cline, Nicholas Alexander Chavez, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, and Austin Nichols. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and Elisha Corbett are directing, from a script by Robinson and Sam Lansky. The project will hit theatres on July 18th 2025.
