Y’know what the slasher sub-genre is missing of late? Holiday horror!
Historically the slashers that set the box-office alight the most are those revolving around a holiday we can all relate to. Currently, all we have are David Gordon Green’s recent Halloween offerings and Eli Roth’s upcoming Thanksgiving. But there are many more events to exploit and terrify audiences with, and a favourite among genre fans is the “most wonderful time of the year.”
Not only do Christmas slashers have a certain sense of comfort and warmth as we see the festive period played out on-screen, but there’s a certain extra menace and discomfort seeing Christmas drenched in blood.
Now, another Christmas slasher comes our way with a brand-new release date. It’s a Wonderful Knife has been described as “It’s a Wonderful Life meets Scream” and has just been acquired by RLJE Films in conjunction with Shudder.
From writer Michael Kennedy of 2020’s Freaky and Tragedy Girls director Tyler MacIntyre, the promising slasher is described as follows:
“A year after saving her town from a psychotic killer on Christmas Eve, Winnie Carruthers’ life is less than wonderful — but when she wishes she’d never been born, she finds herself in a nightmare parallel universe and discovers that without her, things could be much, much worse. Now the killer is back, and she must team up with the town misfit to identify the killer and get back to her own reality.”
With Yellowjackets star Jane Waldrop in the lead and horror staples Katherine Isabelle and Justin Long in supporting roles, the team have secured an impressive cast.
It’s a Wonderful Knife will premiere at Beyond Fest October 8th and release exclusively to theatres November 10th, then premiere on Shudder just in time for the holidays.
Are you looking forward to more seasonal slashing? We sure are!
