A sequel to 2009’s chilling killer kid tale Orphan was long rumoured to be in the works. However, the project was trapped in development hell for so long that plans changed, turning the sequel into a prequel that would see release in 2022.
Following the rather unexpected positive reception to Orphan: First Kill, there are exciting rumbles that Esther’s story isn’t over yet.
Orphan: First Kill director William Brent Bell had the following to say when reached for comment on if Esther’s murderous rampage would continue:
“We’re developing a third one now. The franchise’s rulebook has been opened to where anything is possible. And knowing where we are in the process already, I’m extremely excited about the twists and turns that we have in store.”
Bell sounds very definite in his plans, so a third Orphan chapter seems highly likely. This is no surprise given that the 2022 prequel made an impressive $12.2 million, despite only seeing release on just over 500 screens.
So, will Isabelle Fuhrman terrify us for a third time? The actress, 12 at the time of the 2009 original, bravely reprised her role for Orphan: First Kill, despite being 11 years older. Spectacular camera trickery and de-ageing make-up ensured Fuhrman was frozen in time. It’s entirely possible all of this could be achieved once more, and we hope it is.
We can’t wait to see Esther terrorise another unsuspecting family!
