IS “CRYSTAL LAKE” IN TROUBLE?

Posted on: December 5th, 2023

In October of 2022, Friday the 13th fans got the news they’ve been waiting over a decade to hear. After a protracted rights battle, it was finally time to add some new content to the long-running slasher franchise.

Crystal Lake was announced as a prequel television series produced jointly by A24 and streaming service Peacock. Whilst the exact plot was unknown, a logline promised a look into the dark history of Crystal Lake, as well as shining some light on the early life of Jason Voorhees.

Further exciting fans was the January 2023 announcement that original Friday the 13th star Adrienne King would be joining the series in a recurring role. Scream creator Kevin Williamson was also revealed to be writing an episode that same month.

However, that’s the last we heard, meaning there has been no new updates since January; almost a year now. Does this mean there are issues plaguing this Friday the 13th revival? It’s possible, given just how troublesome getting new Friday content off the ground has been in the past.

Currently, Hannibal producer and Crystal Lake showrunner Bryan Fuller is embroiled in a sexual harassment lawsuit, which is also likely complicating matters. Fuller categorically denies any wrongdoing and has many defending him. Fuller remains aboard Crystal Lake but as of this writing, it appears Fuller’s legal issues are preventing Crystal Lake movie forward.

Will we see this prequel series come to air? Or will the supposed Friday the 13th “curse” strike again and prevent any new content materialising? We’ll be watching this project closely and report any new developments. However, after almost a year of silence, rumours that this project will be scrapped may have some truth to them.X
