It’s time to venture back into the further.
April 19th heralded the release of the first trailer for the fifth instalment in the Insidious franchise. Insidious: The Red Door sees the return of the Lambert family from the series’ first two entries, facing their trauma head-on, over a decade later.
The trailer lays out a very different family dynamic, as Patrick Wilson’s Josh is estranged from the family. After his mother’s funeral brings the family together, his wife Renai suggests he drive their oldest son Dalton to college.
Dalton, now an art major, has no recollection of the past thanks to repression therapy. However, it is through his artwork that he expresses these locked away memories. That is enough to open the door to “the further” and unleash an evil with a decade-long grudge.
Directed by star Patrick Wilson, Insidious: The Red Door comes from a script by Halloween Kills scribe Scott Teems, based on a story by Leigh Whannell. The film will see the return of Wilson, Rose Byrne, Ty Simpkins, and Andrew Astor as the Lambert family, with the trailer’s promise that “it ends where it began.”
Also joining our returnees is franchise face Lin Shaye as psychic Elise Rainier. Despite being killed off in Insidious, Shaye has remained the most integral part of the series, appearing in all subsequent entries. Here it looks as though she has a small cameo, as Wilson is seen watching her on an old VHS.
Along with the action-packed trailer, we also got a simplistic but effective teaser poster, showing the titular red door opening.
Insidious: The Red Door is scheduled for release July 7th 2023, among a slew of summer blockbusters. Will people flock to venture back into “the further?” We’ll be here to report the numbers.
