One of the most unexpected things announced at San Diego Comic-Con was a sequel to IFC and Shudder’s In a Violent Nature.
Described as an “alternative slasher,” the project garnered much attention for its bold narrative and filmmaking choices. Told largely from the killer’s perspective, the film follows Johnny, a local legend resurrected by some camping teens. Determined to get back what is rightfully his, In a Violent Nature charts his blood-thirsty quest to retrieve his beloved locket.
Using only ambient sound, shot in long one-takes and containing some alarmingly gruesome gore, In a Violent Nature has been hailed as a desperately needed fresh take on the slasher formula.
Now, we’re delighted to hear there’s more on the way, as Johnny settles into his place as a modern horror icon.
With the villain himself in attendance, the announcement of a sequel came during Comic-Con’s “The Bold Voice of Contemporary Horror” panel.
Original director Chris Nash will return to write the script, and will serve as an executive producer on the sequel. However, it remains unknown if he’ll take up directing duties once more.
Producers Peter Kuplowsky and Shannon Hanmer are also slated to return, and that is currently all we know, besides the promise that Johnny will once again be the star of the show.
Given that In a Violent Nature became one of IFC’s highest grossing projects in the company’s history, we’re not surprised in the slightest that we’ll be seeing more. Alongside Late Night with the Devil, the film has contributed to 2024 being a hugely successful year for both IFC and indie horror.
Will the sequel see similar success? We hope so. You can still catch In a Violent Nature in some select theatres. However, if you’d prefer to watch at home, the movie is also available to rent, and will stream for Shudder subscribers from Friday the 13th of September.
