Watch out for vengeful fishermen—because Sony Pictures is bringing the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise back from its watery grave! That’s right: a sequel is officially in the works.
Deadline notes that Jennifer Kaytin Robinson has been tapped to direct the film, which is said to be in the early stages of development. Most excitingly, stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr are in talks to reprise their roles!
Leah McKendrick is on board to write the script. According to Deadline, “the idea for the new film came from Robinson and McKendrick, who blew studio execs away when they pitched this idea for a sequel last fall especially given the recent success of the Scream franchise.” Neal H. Moritz is in talks to return as a producer.
Loosely based on Lois Duncan’s 1973 novel of the same name, the original I Know What You Did Last Summer was released in 1997 and followed four friends bound by a fatal secret being stalked by a hook-wielding slasher killer in their small seaside town. The film spawned a direct sequel in 1998, with an unrelated direct-to-video third instalment released in 2006. A short-lived TV series also debuted on Amazon Prime Video in 2021.
