One of the most intriguing genre flicks on our radar right now is adventure/horror/comedy/fantasy weirdy Dave Made a Maze, which was directed by actor Bill Watterson (Ouija, Lost Planet 3), and scooped up the Audience Award for Best Narrative at January’s Slamdance Festival, where it had its world premiere. US audiences will be able to see the film later this year, with Gravitas Ventures having just acquired all North American rights.
Dave Made a Maze employs puppetry, stop-motion, in-camera optical effects and fantastical, DIY sets to bring its bizarre world to life in a twisted, irreverent take on ‘80s classics such as Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal. The film stars comedian Nick Thune as Dave, an unproductive artist who vents his frustration by building a fort/maze in his living room, only to become trapped by the obstacles, booby traps and otherwordly creatures of his own creation. Intent on finding Dave, his girlfriend Annie (Meera Rohit Kumbhani) leads a motley crew of ill-prepared explorers on a rescue mission into the maze.
As we eagerly await the chance to set eyes on the film, it’s well worth revisiting the previously-released teaser.
