“For the first time ever in New York City, people froze to death… In the middle of July.”
After a teaser image was leaked online revealing the title of the fourth Ghostbusters movie, we had a feeling it wouldn’t be too long before a teaser showed up.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire indeed takes us back to New York City, confirming tireless fan speculation amid the working title “Firehouse.”
As the city bakes in a record summer heatwave, something ominous arises from out at sea and quickly sweeps inland. Beach goers and residents desperate to keep cool scramble as a terrifying cloud formation suddenly freezes everything in sight.
With New York frozen solid, we are reintroduced to our primary cast from Afterlife, including Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, McKenna Grace, and Finn Wolfhard. The characters having relocated to New York City in a bid to pursue ghost hunting full-time.
Getting only the briefest shots of Ghostbusters legacy cast members, but just enough to know they’re there, we learn what is bringing New York to a frozen stand-still. The “Death Chill” is a supernatural force which embodies a victim’s worst fears as they freeze from the inside out.
Now, it is up to Ghostbusters old and new to band together and stop the big freeze for good, and the they just might have the technology to accomplish that.
Looking like the most ambitious Ghostbusters chapter to date, Frozen Empire delivers on its full-blown reunion promise. We have a return to the original locale and a great many original cast members back for more. Whilst the trailer looks very promising, we can’t help but opine the one downside in the absence of Sigourney Weaver.
Weaver has previously stated that she will not be returning as she simply wasn’t asked. However, looking at this new teaser, it does seem a rather busy movie and it’s difficult to see where Dana Barrett might fit in.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is set to release March 29 2024, having been moved from its previous date of December 20 2023 due to strike action. Will the fourth entry be worth the wait? Only time will tell.
