News concerning Fox’s imminent TV adaptation of The Exorcist continues to flood in, and the latest is genuinely quite exciting. As reported by Deadline, joining the cast of the series is Geena Davis, playing Angela Rance. Angela is the mother of Charlotte, the show’s equivalent of the 1973 film’s Regan.
While the height of Davis’ mainstream acclaim undoubtedly came with 1991’s Thelma & Louise, she is celebrated more by horror fans for her memorable performances in David Cronenberg’s The Fly and Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice. Her character in The Exorcist, who is plagued by recurring nightmares about a demon, is described as ‘naturally beautiful, regal and proud but weighed down by stress. Angela does everything she can to stay positive and keep her faith even though her family is currently struggling.’
Davis joins a cast that so far includes Scream Queens’ Brianne Howey as Charlotte, Hannah Kasulka as her sister Casey, and Alfonso Herrera (Demon Inside) and Ben Daniels (Doom, Locke) as two priests with very different approaches to their work.
Written by Jeremy Slater (The Lazarus Effect, Death Note) and directed by Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), The Exorcist will air on Fox later this year.
