18 months after he was announced to have “been approached” to return, we can confirm Freddie Prinze Jr has officially signed on to Sony’s Last Summer reboot.
Prinze Jr will reprise his role of Ray Bronson, a part he has played twice before, in 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer and its 1998 sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.
Prinze Jr’s original co-star Jennifer Love Hewitt is also said to be “in talks” to join the project, having been vocal about her desire to do so. However, we’re hearing from a reliable source that Hewitt’s contract “is still being finalized,” and we should expect an announcement soon.
Said to be like 2022’s Scream reboot, Last Summer will feature Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Haur-King alongside Prinze Jr. Riverdale star Camila Mendes was originally cast in the lead, but recently exited the project due to scheduling conflicts, with Wonders replacing her.
Director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson also co-wrote the reboot alongside Sam Lansky, from an original draft by Leah McKendrick.
Of his time on the original Last Summer, Prinze Jr has recently been vocal about how the project almost drove him to quit acting. According to Prinze Jr, director Jim Gillespie was disappointed that actor Jeremy Sisto passed on the Ray Bronson role, taking his frustrations out on Prinze Jr as the second choice.
On an episode of his horror-centric podcast, That Was Pretty Scary, the actor recently stated:
“It was a struggle to finish work every day. I was in pain every single day on that movie. However, it prepared me for this business in a way. I’m forever grateful to Jim for being such an asshole because I’ve never met one like that since…no other director I’ve met felt crossing those lines would be OK. I’ve been prepared for every lesser A-hole in the business.”

I Know What You Did Last Summer is set to hit screens on July 18th 2025 via Sony and Columbia Pictures.
