From what we know, things are looking quite bleak for Saw XI right now. Originally scheduled to debut last month, the project was delayed a year until September 2025.
Since that time, we’ve had very few concrete updates. We know that franchise regular Kevin Greutert will return to direct, with Marcus Dunstan promising a script with something “angry” to say… but that’s it.
Reliable sources report various issues behind the scenes. These include disagreements between Greutert and studio executives, concerns over Tobin Bell’s advancing age, and Lionsgate’s current financial troubles.
However, now, it seems we finally have some positive news regarding the sequel. Coming from a Saw 20th Anniversary screening, franchise stars Shawnee Smith and Costas Mandylor had some intriguing things to say about their possible return.
Smith, known for her role as Amanda Young, and a stand-out of Saw X, said the following:
“We’re working on Saw XI to make it worthy, it’s going to be a blast. Cecilia is the most deserving of being in a trap.”
Smith’s statements seem to confirm that she’ll return in some capacity, whilst also confirming the return of Synnøve Macody Lund. Lund played Dr Cecilia Pederson, a fraudulent surgeon, and the main antagonist of Saw X. An immediate hit with fans, and surprisingly surviving the film, Lund has already championed her willingness to return. Now it seems to most definitely be on the cards.
Madylor, who made a surprise cameo as Detective Mark Hoffmann in Saw X, played things slightly coyer. The actor stated only:
“Shawnee’s raved for Saw XI. I’m not allowed to say anything about the next one, otherwise I’ll get killed before my time!”
So, whilst Mandylor neither confirms or denies a return, we know he knows something… Surely that must hint at some kind of involvement?
Despite the behind-the-scenes turmoil, it’s evident Saw XI is still moving forward, albeit slowly. However, will the delays stop the sequel meeting its September 26th 2025 release date? We’ll let you know as soon as we have word.
